Due to current government regulations, there has always been a severe lack of federally-funded medical cannabis research. However, an intent to fund notice was recently issued by the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH). The goal is to study the effects of “lesser-known minor cannabinoids and terpenes,” and how they can potentially treat pain. This notice is a precursor to the official Funding Opportunity Announcement, which is expected to be released as early as January 2019. Those that are invited to apply include state agencies, nonprofits, for-profit organizations, small businesses, and more.

Already in the first quarter of 2018, new studies have emerged that have showcased the powerful effects of medical cannabis. Research covered a variety of topics, from effects on elderly patients to certain types of cancer. Additionally, another study found that THC can enhance the pain-relieving effects of opioids, which means that patients can lessen the number of opioids when taken with medical cannabis. Essentially, more and more studies continue to reveal the medical benefits of cannabis.
