CBD’s Effects on Anxiety

Most people experience some degree of stress and/or anxiety. However, when one has an actual anxiety disorder, finding the right treatment can be difficult. Unlike cancer, Parkinson’s disease, and more, anxiety is not an approved condition in the state of Illinois for medical cannabis. On the other hand, with the approval of post-traumatic stress disorder, researchers may be able to look at the effects medical cannabis or cannabidiol has on patients with severe anxiety. Learn more about CBD's effects on anxiety below.

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol, or CBD, is a certain compound found within marijuana. Scientists are studying this compound in particular because it has shown to be extremely beneficial for patients facing different medical issues. One of the main benefits is that it does not have psychoactive properties, unlike other compounds in marijuana. This makes it a good treatment option for many medical problems, such as anxiety.

The Scientific Response

In the areas of the brain that affects anxiety, there are the necessary structures and receptors present in order to benefit from the effects of CBD. For example, there are cannabinoid receptors in the prefrontal cortex, amygdala, and hippocampus. The activation of these receptors help those with anxiety by lowering the heart rate and blood pressure responses that occur when one is having a panic attack or dealing with severe anxiety.

Essentially, CBD is able to reduce anxiety through activating the CBD receptors in a patients’ brain. This allows the CBD to positively control one’s anxiety and emotional and physical response to the disorder.
