Medical Cannabis Alzheimers
In the state of Illinois, agitation of Alzheimer’s is an approved condition for the use of medical cannabis. Dementia is a serious condition that affects millions of elderly adults, and two-thirds of all dementia cases are linked to Alzheimer’s. Though research has only begun in the last decade, medical cannabis and Alzheimer’s seem to be correlated to a certain degree. Clinically, Alzheimer’s is a progressive neurological brain disorder that leads to memory loss, disorientation, loss of understanding, and more.
Different studies have been performed at institutes across the world, such as Madrid’s Complutense University, the Cajal Institute, the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain, and more. Most of the research focused on inflammation of the brain. Doctors are still not completely sure what exactly causes Alzheimer’s, but it is known that brain inflammation speeds up the mental decline that patients face. This anti-inflammatory effect that medical cannabis offers can also stimulate the growth of new brain cells.
Another study focused on the specific memory problems that Alzheimer’s presents. Certain cannabis-based treatments were shown to improve memory loss, as a compound within the marijuana plant can potentially ease these memory problems. Although there is no cure for Alzheimer’s, a treatment that can possibly slow down this terrible disease is one worth looking into.
