National Cancer Survivors Day!

June 2nd is National Cancer Survivors Day! Many patients across the State of Illinois that are suffering from cancer choose to supplement their treatment with medical cannabis. Medical cannabis is often able to assist with the side effects of cancer treatment, particularly nausea and loss of appetite from chemotherapy.

National Cancer Survivors Day

On the first Sunday in June, is National Cancer Survivors Day. More than 15.5 million Americans are cancer survivors, and millions more are affected by this disease. According to their website, it is a celebration for those who have survived, an inspiration for those recently diagnosed, a gathering of support for families, and an outreach to the community.

This day provides an opportunity to connect with others that have a history of cancer, particularly as a form of support. It also promotes cancer education, whether this comes in the form of additional research, more resources, or better health care legislation.

If you are interested in finding a local event, please reach out to your local cancer treatment center, hospital, or American Cancer Society office.

How Can Medical Cannabis Help?

As mentioned previously, medical cannabis is extremely beneficial for many cancer patients who are going through chemotherapy. Medical cannabis is not approved as a true alternative to chemotherapy, but it is approved to assist with the symptoms. Symptoms include nausea, lack of appetite, muscle pain, nerve pain, and more, of which medical marijuana has proven effective in treating.

Studies have also shown that medical cannabis may be successful in reducing tumor size, though these studies are not complete yet. In the State of Illinois, medical cannabis is approved for Cancer which encompasses those receiving chemotherapy.
