Treating Glaucoma with Medical Cannabis
Glaucoma is a common eye condition from which more than three million Americans suffer. Globally, this number reaches nearly sixty million. Glaucoma causes optical nerve damage, and increased pressure in your eye. This can eventually lead to blindness, particularly when left untreated. Treatment varies but can include surgery and/or topical drugs. In the State of Illinois, glaucoma is an approved condition for medical cannabis, as it can help with glaucoma-related symptoms.
Glaucoma as a Condition
While evidence currently suggests that glaucoma has a connection to other neurodegenerative diseases, the exact cause of this condition is not known. Glaucoma is considered to be a neurodegenerative condition and is directly related to intraocular pressure (IOP). For those looking to treat glaucoma, doctors will often prescribe eye drops or surgery, which will target IOP.
In regard to medical cannabis as a treatment, early studies showed that cannabinoids are able to alleviate accompanying symptoms due to their ability to lower the IOP. Additionally, cannabinoids have neuroprotective actions. Medical cannabis is more commonly used for late stage glaucoma, where ophthalmologists look to help their patients treat the related symptoms versus is the early stages.
As studies emerge and more research is funded, additional information regarding medical cannabis and glaucoma will be available.
