Fibrous dysplasia is an uncommon benign bone condition in which abnormal fibrous tissue develops in place of a normal bone. Because the tissue is irregular, it can weaken the bone as a whole and cause it to either deform or fracture. Fibrous dysplasia accounts for roughly 7 percent of all benign bone tumors and it can impact any bone in the body. However, it most often occurs in the femur, tibia, ribs, skull, humerus, or pelvis. Most of the time, fibrous dysplasia occurs in one spot of one bone (monostotic fibrous dysplasia), but it can also occur in multiple spots of multiple bones (polyostotic fibrous dysplasia).


The cause of fibrous dysplasia is a gene mutation however, it is not passed from parent to child. The abnormal bone begins to form before birth, but it may not be discovered until childhood, adolescence or even adulthood. There is no known cure for the condition, and treatment usually revolves around surgery that focuses on both relieving pain and stabilizing bones.


Fibrous dysplasia does not always cause any signs or symptoms, especially when it is a mild case. If the case is more severe, symptoms will appear that reflect the severity of the lesion. Pain is the main trigger that something is wrong, as it can hurt when the bone tissue grows and expands while the affected area is still weak. This pain is more likely to occur when the affected area is in a weight-bearing bone.

Fractures are another symptom, as the fibrous bone will be very weak. It can unexpectedly break off or fracture. Bone deformity is also common, as poor healing can cause deformities. Other symptoms include hormonal disturbances in young patients and skin discoloration in the affected area.
